BAFTA Awards 2024 Winners: ‘Oppenheimer’
The 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were held on February 18th, 2024, and it was clear who the night belonged to: Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s epic historical drama about the creation of the atomic bomb, swept the ceremony with a staggering seven awards.
The film’s triumphant night included the top honors of Best Film and Best Director for Nolan, marking his first BAFTA win in either category. Cillian Murphy also solidified his leading man status by winning Best Actor for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb.” The supporting acting categories saw Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph take home trophies for their roles in Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, respectively.
Here’s a closer look at Oppenheimer’s impressive BAFTA haul:
- Best Film
- Best Director – Christopher Nolan
- Best Actor – Cillian Murphy
- Best Supporting Actor – Robert Downey Jr.
- Outstanding British Film
- Outstanding Cinematography
- Outstanding Sound
While Oppenheimer dominated the main categories, other films enjoyed their moment in the spotlight. Emma Stone won Best Actress for her performance in the darkly comedic Poor Things, while the poignant German-language drama The Zone of Interest took home the award for Outstanding Film Not in the English Language.
Beyond the awards themselves, the ceremony also featured several memorable moments:
- Michael J. Fox received a standing ovation for his presentation at the Outstanding British Film Award.
- Rebel Wilson, the show’s host, kept the audience entertained with her witty remarks and playful interactions with the nominees.
- Nolan used his acceptance speech for Best Director to acknowledge the efforts of individuals and organizations working to reduce nuclear weapons.
With its impressive BAFTA showing, Oppenheimer is now considered a strong frontrunner for the upcoming Academy Awards. Whether it can replicate its BAFTAs success at the Oscars remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Oppenheimer has emerged as a major force in this year’s awards season.
